Oh,
I couldn't just leave the page alone, could I? I wanted
some gaming news feeds on the main page to keep it more
alive like the forums are a living entity that keeps
growing and growing..... |

Redesign |
Dec
19 2004 |
I did a bit
of site redesign to simplify the look and categorize
things better. I think it's much nicer now. The long
game list on the left side is now in its own GAMES page
with an added little history bit that I'll expand in
the future.
The COMICS and OLD NEWS,
used to being at the bottom of the heap, are now happy
being visible just in case you want a peek. And the
GAMETALK graphic/link is in keeping with the rest. Little
changes got made to several of the other pages as well. |

GBC News Story |
Dec
18 2004 |
There have
been several news stories about the Daikatana page and
the pre-alpha download I put up. So many people downloaded
the pre-alpha and Daikatana demo that they split the
nuts off my Streamload account, so I set up the download
to come from this site instead. Heh.
Anyway, 1UP.COM wrote up
a great little news story about the release and I modified
the Daikatana page to add the link and a little extra
info. That's all.

Check out some of the
Keen sites on the Net to reaquaint yourself with the

So there you go - Keen's
birthdays. In a row.
And the only cool present
I have for Keen is an old picture from the beginnings
of id Software while we were creating the Super Mario
3 demo to show Nintendo - in the photo gallery!

DOOMsday! |
Dec
10 2004 |
It's the 11th birthday
of the mighty DOOM! Unfortunately, I don't remember
anything about its development history anymore - I
don't know how that happened.
Ok, just kidding. If
you haven't visited the DOOM page in a while, take
a look for a minute to remember what was once a world
obsession.
|
|
To celebrate, I've put up
some pictures from DOOM's development in the Photo Gallery
- the amount of pictures in there just doubled. Stay tuned
for more old pictures next week when it will be Commander
Keen's birthday two times! (First & second trilogies)

News |
Dec
7 2004 |
I just put up the beginnings
of the Daikatana page. Since it's taking so long to
get these game pages up, I decided that I'll at least
make a start at them!
The cool news about the
Daikatana page is the release of a long lost pre-alpha!
So if you're a Daikatana lover (or liker), check it
out...it's slightly interesting.
Also, the heading on
all pages on the site will direct you back to here.

Just watched National
Treasure and it was really great! Very
reminiscent of The Goonies but for a more
grown-up audience. You should definitely see it -
and bring the kids if you have any.
I sold my iPod within
a week of posting that I'm selling it in my forums.
And the person who bought it isn't even registered
on the forums but is a lurker on there! It's such
a hot item that the buyer sold it at a higher price
to someone else who wanted it - before I even shipped
the thing!
Thanksgiving's coming
up... the 4 day weekend will be really nice, like
a mini vacation. I'll probably be chillin' at home
playing GTA:San Andreas
since I'm ADDICTED to the thing. The previous addiction
was Burnout3 which I still play on occasion, but GTA:SA
is Da Bomb. Right now. I'm putting off buying Half-Life2
until it gets patched a bit....since I have an awesome
game to play right now anyway.

Pictures in the Photo Gallery - pipin' hot!

Work is going
really well - just showed the current status of Gauntlet
to Midway's execs and everyone was happy with the progress.
The game's looking really nice and playing unlike anything
in the genre.
Oh, I just pumped some
Ion Storm pictures into
the Photo
Gallery if you want to see what all the fuss
was about ...all those years ago!
That's about it! Have fun
- it's the reason you're alive!

Finally got back from
visiting Raluca in Bucharest - wow, what a great trip!
It's always awesome when we can spend time together.
I took lots of photos and some video. I dealt with
the INS a little more and hopefully things will finish
up here pretty soon, like in several weeks.
Because we're so nuts
about each other and our families want to know how
we're doing, I started up http://johnandraluca.com.
That's where i'll be putting my trip pictures and
stuff up.
Also, as you can tell
by the picture on the right, I have an iPod Photo.
This thing is just awesome. Color LCD, 40gb, new font,
hook up to TV while listening to music, etc. Apple
has a 60gb version too but I don't need that much......YET!
:)

Also, if any of you have checked out the Photo Gallery
(link is at the top-right), you would have noticed how
cool the layout is, colors, ease of use, etc. It's so
much easier to put pics up on that site instead of doing
all the layout and crap myself with Dreamweaver, not
to mention eat up my site hosting space with images.
If you want to keep your own photo gallery, then by
all means try the free trial version of Smugmug.com.
If you decide to register, mention my email address
john@rome.ro and you'll get $5 off!

Birthday Quake!
Today is Quake's
8th birthday! As the years march forth, my game babies
get older...and older....and older. But I remain the
same age! Well, mentally at least. Keeps me sane, I
guess.
So, yeah, eight years
ago it was a lonely Saturday afternoon when I was by
myself up at ole id Software,
putting together the shareware distribution of Quake
and getting ready to upload it to The Planet. My, how
times have changed. And there's a Quake
4 yet to be released, too. I'm excited to
see how that one turns out - my friends at
Raven have always done a great job on
id's games.
Oh, and I can't wait
for DOOM 3 as
well. Major sequelitis. Let's see, since I've been gone
we've all played Quake 2,
Return To Castle Wolfenstein,
Commander Keen
for GBA, Quake 3,
DOOM/DOOM II for
GBA, Wolfenstein 3D
for GBA....and now we wait for DOOM
3 and Quake 4.
Okay! |

|
Of course, I wish Quake's
brothers well and they will all have some great birthdays,
whenever they are, and maybe they'll eat some cake and grow
some legs and arms and scare the hell out of some people and....ummmm....
Anyway, just wanted to say
Happy Birthday to the most special Quake
of all!

New photo section - check
it out, you can click on the link that says "The ROME.RO
Photo Gallery" and if you belong to the forums and send
me your pic, you can be in there too!

Birthday Wolfenstein 3D!
Today was Wolfenstein
3D's 12th birthday! That means that the
FPS market is 12 years old as of today, since many regard
W3D as the first true game of the genre. It's cool to
see how the genre's evolved over the past 12 years with
the advent of the tactical shooter (Rainbow
Six; Ghost Recon), online tournament shooter
(Quake 3; UT2K4),
and massively multiplayer military shooter (Battlefield:1942).
I know there's some more but they are more nichey and
one-off-ish. |

|
Geez,
we made Wolfenstein so many years ago that I can't remember
anything that happened back then. JUST KIDDING! I remember
everything almost as if it was yesterday. I definitely
remember it being great fun - it was a great time for
id. And it's great to see the legacy survive in Return
To Castle Wolfenstein.
Sadly, on February 26th,
the creator of the original 1981 classic Castle
Wolfenstein, Silas
Warner, died. I've always been an admirer of
Silas' and Tom Hall and I went to his wake in Chico,
CA in March. I was lucky enough to get Silas' last collection
of disks and memorabilia which included a pristine copy
of the original package of Castle Wolfenstein. R.I.P.
Silas. |
